Wireless Connectivity Frequently Asked Questions

This is a listing of the questions we answer the most. If you require further help, please call the Helpdesk at extension 4357.

What Hardware Do I Need to Connect?

You'll need a laptop computer with wireless ability. Some laptops, like Centrino Compliant™ laptops, have built-in wireless and are ready to go. If you do not have built-in wireless, you must buy a wireless PCMCIA card, or a USB Wireless Adapter.

What Software Do I Need to Connect?

I.T. recommends Microsoft Windows XP™ for your laptop. We ONLY support XP Service Pack 2, because of it's increased security for wireless.

What kinds of devices can connect?

Since our wireless network is 802.11b & 802.11g, any device with the ability to connect to B and G networks will get the signal. The catch is that we need to authenticate to the network, so your device has to be able to deal with prompts and sending text. Dell Axims™ have been tried and do work, as should all Windows-based hand-helds. We will not support, configure, or troubleshoot these devices however. Our list of devices that won't connect includes Blackberry devices, BlueTooth Devices, and Cell-phones with web browsers.

What kind of connection is it?

Wireless internet is essentially a radio communication. Your wireless connection has a maximum throughput of 11 megabytes per second, compared to dial-up which is .56 megabytes per second ( about 200 times faster! ). We wouldn't recommend streaming audio or video, but it should be adequate for websurfing.

Is this secure?

Yes, and No. Your internet traffic is encrypted, at 128 bits. We have configured our wireless network with safeguards to help you maintain your privacy and keep you protected. However, your signals are being sent over airwaves; and as such there is always a slight chance that the signals may be intercepted.

I need to switch users, is there an easy way to do so?

It occasionally happens that you borrow a laptop, or help a friend set one up, and you login as yourself on someone else's laptop. To obtain and run the 'fix':

1. Right-Click and Save THIS to the desktop

2. Double-Click the icon named 'MU Wireless UnReg'

3. Answer 'Yes' to the Registry Editor prompt.

4. Click 'Ok'

5. Re-Register as the owner of the laptop.
